Active Shooter

While not a new phenomenon, active shooters (rapid mass murderers at schools, churches, governmental facilities and public space attackers) are more and more in the public eye, a focus of media attention and a worry for many.  This classroom only course includes a wide-ranging history of active shooters in the United States.  This history will include a look at the attackers, the targets, the nature and duration of the attacks, the outcomes and the responses to the attacks.  It will explore the United States over 50+ year response to these events both good and bad.  It will include lessons learned, lessons not learned and those lessons which our society cannot or will not accept.  It covers details of multiple attacks in a truthful way. Students will be presented with difficult and though provoking questions, possible options and accurate information often ignored or altered by the media. The course ends with a discussion of choices, options, decisions, planning/preparation and how to handle these conversations within your family.  This course is an honest discussion about violence and murder; it contains some (though limited) imagery that some may find disturbing.  The purpose is to empower students to think critically about the problem and their response should they find themselves in an unimaginable situation.
