Before opening West Texas Handgun Training, Ray taught Texas License to Carry and Defensive Pistol Skills for 15 years. He has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years, with the last 16 exclusively focused on the defense of homicide and capital murder cases in Texas. He has extensive knowledge of the law governing the use of force in Texas and the legal aspects of the defensive use of handguns. He has also completed training for the civilian response to active shooters as well as instructing church security teams.
Ray is first and foremost a student and then an instructor. He has studied and trained in the use of the pistol for self-defense and in competition for the past 20 years under instructors nationwide. For the past 18 years his primary teacher and mentor has been Tom Givens of Rangemaster based in Plant City, Florida. He has completed the four levels of the Rangemaster Pistol Instructor Certification track, alone constituting over 80 hours of classroom, range, and practical teaching instruction, in addition to written and shooting performance testing to exacting standards. His own training in the subject is ongoing with over 800 hours of professional instruction in both shooting and teaching to date.
